Quilters Companion - AU (2019-11)

(Antfer) #1
the seam so it intersects the point
where the points meet — this seam
will be closer to ⅜in than the standard
¼in because of the angle of the
diagonal seams.

Continue in this manner to join
pairs together to make panels of
four HRTs; then join the four HRT panels
together to make eight HRT panels.

4

Lay out the panels, referring to
the photograph of Deborah’s
quilt — or, alternatively, experiment
to develop your own layout. Once
you have an array that you like, join
the units together, continuing to use
standard ¼in seams to join longer
edges of HRTs and the wider ⅜in
seams to join shorter edges.

Finishing

1

Cut the backing fabric into
two equal lengths, remove the
selvedges and sew the two pieces
together, side by side, with a ½in seam.
Press the seam open.

2

The quilt top, backing and
batting are ready for a longarm
quilting machine as they are. If you’re
quilting by hand or on a domestic
machine, follow the instructions for
Preparing the Quilt Sandwich in the

free downloadable Basics Guide* to
pin or baste the quilt top, batting and
backing together.

3

Quilt as desired. This quilt was
machine quilted in the ditch to
emphasise the zigzag design.

4

Trim the excess backing fabric
and batting ¼in outside the edge
of the quilt top.

5

Follow the instructions in Binding
the Quilt in The Basics Guide* to
bind the quilt using the six 2½in strips
of print fabric.

Deborah’s
Construction Tip
I like to sew my units together
in groups of two, then four,
then eight. This gives me more
control when sewing and then
laying them out. This also makes
it easier to sew the final seams
— which should only be a few
longer seams.
