Does the world need yet

another book of patterns for

making quilts from jelly roll

strips? Possibly not , but ... if

you enjoy buying jelly rolls

or if you’re looking for quick

and easy quilt projects that

you can ‘whip up’ without

any hassle, or if you’re a

novice quiltmaker or enjoy

making scrap quilts, this book is likely to

be a welcome addition to your library. For starters,

there’s a generous number of projects in it, and they’re

all bed size. (The smallest is 64in x 80in.) However,

because they’re block-based, you can change the

size of the projects quite readily if you wish. They are

graded from easiest to more advanced — and even the

more advanced are fairly straightforward — so you can

tackle these projects with confidence. Most of them are

based on classic patchwork shapes put together in non-

standard ways, so you’ll probably feel that you haven’t

seen most of these patterns before. The instructions are

clear and illustrated with lots of diagrams, and Vanessa

provides materials lists for working with fat quarters,

fat eighths and scraps from your stash as alternatives

to store-bought jelly rolls. There’s a lot to love!

small — 32in square or less — but many of the

designs lend themselves quite readily to repetition

if you wanted to make multiple versions of a

design and join them for a bed quilt. Most also

feature Sharon’s characteristic mix of patchwork

and appliqué. In addition to project instructions

in Martingale’s typical high-quality style, Sharon

provides an excellent guide to two methods she

uses for preparing appliqué shapes and stitching by

machine, although, of course, you could make any

of the projects using a variety of hand or machine

appliqué methods.
