Simple Shapes Stunning Quilts:
100 Designs to Sew for Patchwork
Perfection
By Stuart Hillard
What a fabulous resource this book is! Patterns and
instructions for 100 quilts, all made using simple shapes.
The projects are organised into five chapters: one-
patch quilts; strips and squares; triangles; curves; and
foundation-pieced quilts. Every chapter has its share
of easy, beginner-friendly designs — terrific for novices
or those looking to make a quick project. There are also
designs that require a little more experience or time to
complete and some that are a challenge. Stuart has
drawn on his years of teaching experience to include lots of quiltmaking tips and tricks,
as well as a chapter that provides an excellent overview of basic skills, including design,
cutting, paper piecing, appliqué techniques, how to add borders and finishing a quilt. This
is a book that you’ll find yourself dipping into time and time again. Published by Pavilion.

Visual Guide to Straight-Line Quilting:
Professional Quality Results on Any
Machine
By Natalie Whiting Bonner
With the rise in enthusiasm for machine quilting, many
quiltmakers have become keen to develop their skills so that
they can complete every aspect of their project themselves.
While free-motion machine quilting has been ‘on trend’ in
recent years, more designers have begun to explore the
creative opportunities offered by straight-line designs.
For those working on a domestic sewing machine, straight-line designs stitched with a
walking foot can be easier to master, so this guide to linear designs for quilting triangles,
squares, borders and all-over a quilt top, will be very welcome. It’s likely to also be of
interest to those who quilt with a longarm machine who wish to develop their ruler skills.
Natalie provides 48 unique designs, with another 13 variations, all illustrated with step-
by-step photos. And, she says, once you’ve got the hang of her straight-line designs, you
will realise how easy it is to create your own. Published by Stash Books.

Quilt by Color: Scrappy Quilts
with a Plan
By Susan Ache
There’s a new precut in town: the Colour Cut. They are
bundles of 12 different fabrics curated by colour, sold in
½yd bundles, fat-quarter bundles, 5in-strip bundles or
10in-square bundles. The fabrics in each Colour Cut bundle
have been designed by different people, giving you loads of
variety. They are fabulous for making controlled scrap quilts
as they enable you to use a range of different prints and
shades without the expense of accumulating a huge stash.
Susan Ache has created nine quilt projects to help you get
started using Colour Cuts — but, of course, you don’t need to
buy special precuts. If you already have a stash, dive in and use it up; Susan’s instructions
provide cutting instructions if you’re working from stash rather than precuts. Her projects
are also an excellent ‘toe in the water’ for quiltmakers who would love to make scrappy
quilts but are nervous about choosing a large number of different fabrics and getting them
to work together. Published by That Patchwork Place.
