Quilters Companion - AU (2019-11)

(Antfer) #1
cutting fabric for the mirror reversed
shape, simply turn the template over
so that it is face down on the fabric
before tracing around it.

5

Choose fabrics for each shape,
referring to the photo of Deborah’s
quilt as a guide. Trace around the
templates on the right side of your
chosen fabric. If you’re using a fabric for
more than one shape, leave at least ½in
between shapes. Cut each shape out
¼in by eye outside the traced lines.

6

Hand stitch a line of running
stitch about ⅛in inside the raw
edge of all the fabric circles cut for
the berries, leaving long thread tails
at the beginning and end. Lay the
fabric shapes face down and centre
the cardboard circle you made in
Step 3 on top of them. Pull up the
thread to gather the seam allowance
over to the back evenly and firmly, as
shown in Diagram 1. Spray the edge
of the circle with starch and press
the shapes well on both sides. Gently
remove the thread and cardboard
and press again.

7

Lay all the shapes on the
background fabric. Trim the bias
strips to the appropriate lengths.
Plan the order in which to appliqué
the shapes. You could actually start
by stitching some of the top layers to
those immediately below them – the
leaf-shape decorations on the vase, for
example, and the oval flower centres.

8

Once you have a plan, needleturn
appliqué the shapes in place
on the background fabric. To do this,
use the needle to sweep the seam
allowance under to the traced line
a little at a time and stitch each
shape to the background with tiny
stitches that just catch the fold.
Then go straight down and travel
behind the background to make the
next stitch. Use thread to match the
appliqué fabrics and clip into the seam
allowance on concave curves.

9

Press the block from the wrong
side of the fabric. Trim the

square to measure 20½in, keeping the
appliqué centred.

Borders 1 and 2

1

Sew a 3½in strip of aqua and
brown stripe print fabric to the left
and right edges of the centre square.
Press seams outwards.

2

Sew a 3½in square of brown and
pink print fabric to each end of
the remaining two aqua and brown
strips, then sew these strips to the
top and bottom edges of the centre
square. Press seams outwards.

3

Sew a cream print triangle to
opposite edges of the quilt top.
Press seams outwards. Then sew
a cream print triangle to each of
the remaining two edges and press
seams outwards.

4

The cream print triangles have
been cut a little oversize. Trim
the outer edges of the cream print
triangles ¼in beyond the corners of
the brown and pink Border 2 corner
squares, as shown in Diagram 2.

5

Measure your quilt top vertically
and horizontally through the
centre. Trim the four 2¼in strips of
aqua and brown geometric print fabric
to this length. Sew a strip to the left
and right edges of the quilt top. Press
seams outwards.

6

Sew a 2¼in square of red tone-
on-tone print fabric to each end
of the remaining two strips and then
sew them to the top and bottom edges
of the quilt top. Press seams outwards.

Border 3

1

Cross cut two of the 7in strips of
large floral print fabric to yield
eight strips, 7in x 22⅝in.

2

Cross cut two of the 5¾in strips
of pink tone-on-tone print fabric
to yield six strips, 5¾in x 22⅝in.

3

Lay out four floral print strips and
three pink tone-on-tone strips in
a row, alternating the fabrics, and with
their long edges matching. If you are
using directional prints, double check

that all the strips are oriented so that
the printed designs will be the right
way up in the finished quilt. Sew the
strips in the row together. Repeat to
make another panel exactly the same.

4

Measure the width of your
quilt top horizontally through
the centre. Measure each of your
patchwork panels. They need to be
the same. If they’re not, either re-sew
seams in the patchwork panels or trim
a small amount from their left and right
edges until they match the quilt top.

5

Sew a panel to the top and
bottom edges of the quilt top –
again, double checking that directional
prints will be the right way around in
the quilt. Press seams outwards.

6

Measure your quilt top
vertically through the centre.
Trim the remaining large floral print
strips and pink tone-on-tone print
strips to this length.

7

Lay out two floral print strips and
two pink tone-on-tone print strips
in a row, alternating the fabrics and
with their long edges matching. For the
first panel, start with a floral print strip
left-most. Sew the strips together.

8

Repeat Step 7 to make a
second panel, but this time
start with a pink tone-on-tone print
strip left-most.

9

Sew the panel from Step 7 to the
left edge of the quilt top, and the
panel from Step 8 to the right edge.
Press seams outwards.

Border 4

1

Join the five 4½in strips of aqua
and brown stripe print fabric
together, end to end, to make one long
strip.

2

Measure your quilt top
horizontally across the centre.
Cut two strips this long from the long
strip. Sew them to the top and bottom
edges of the quilt top. Press seams
outwards.

Finishing

1

The quilt top, backing and batting
are ready for a longarm quilting
machine as they are. If you’re quilting
by hand or on a domestic machine,
follow the instructions for Preparing
the Quilt Sandwich in the free
downloadable Basics Guide* to pin
or baste the quilt top, batting and
backing together.

2

Quilt as desired. This quilt was
machine quilted in a series of
straight-line designed worked in
cream thread.
