Block Masterclass
Variations
Sun Rays
This nine-patch block is traditionally pieced with three
shapes — the centre and four corner squares, the eight thin
triangles of the star points and the four triangles of the
edges. If you use the HRT method, you can create the four
‘star point units’ from HRTs. Note that each star point unit
has a forward and a backward HRT unit.
Kite
This block is created with two forward
and two backward HRT units.
Zigzags
A zigzag pattern can be created
across a quilt by creating numerous
HRTs in contrasting colours. Forward
and backward units must be paired to
create the overall design.
Twisted
Make four forward HRTs
— this block will involve
sewing a partial seam for
the centre square.
Forward and
backward units
As these units cannot be rotated
90 degrees to create the opposite
diagonal you will need to make
forward and backward units to create
your block patterns.
