Dan Tidswell’s tips for location shooting

For this kind of work, you have to have a super-portable setup and be quick on your feet

1 “For consistent results, shoot
in Manual mode and take test
shots at the beginning of every setup.
It’s good practice to give regular
feedback on these to your model.”

2 “Set a manual white balance.
Even if it’s not perfect, at least
your raw files will be consistent, and
you can correct them instantly at
the post-production stage.”

3 “Work the scene – keep moving
your feet and recomposing your
frame. Shoot quickly and nail your key
shots first. If it’s just not working,
cut your losses and move on. There
will always be another amazing
location around the next corner.”

4 “Travel light. On most shoots
I use two camera bodies with
a different prime lens on each. Tripods
and reflectors quickly draw attention,
so learn how to use the available light
effectively, and you’ll often find that
you can do without them.”

5 “Take plenty of memory cards
with you. When shooting on
location, I will often fill three or
four cards per day.”

6 “My post-production workflow
starts with basic corrections
in Lightroom. I then retouch my best
images in Photoshop, using a separate
optimised workflow I’ve devised to
get consistent results.”

Eye AF: game-changer

“Sony’s Eye AF is incredible and works so well,”
says Dan. “I use it all the time and can’t imagine
shooting without it now. It has transformed
my location work and gives me more time
to interact with my model.”
