Stack by hand
Not all cameras have a built-in
focus-stacking feature like the
Nikon D850, but you can still
focus-stack manually. Turn off
autofocus and shoot the same
scene repeatedly, manually
moving the focus ring to different
points in your composition. If
your camera allows tap-to-focus
via the LCD screen, you could use
autofocus to tap on areas of
focus – a method that works well
when you’re low to the ground
and can’t use the viewfinder.

Dave achieved the hyper-realistic feel of this
shot through focus-stacking. First he shot the
same scene repeatedly with the same settings
- except for the focal point, which he carefully
shifted between each shot. In Photoshop,
Dave blended the images together to give
the impression of consistent sharp focus
throughout the image – with a sharpness
greater than you’d get by simply using
a narrow aperture in a single shot.
