Low-light^

landscape

challenge

As the light starts to drop
and the winter sets in, take
up our shooting challenge!

n the winter months, the
landscape photography
genre comes into its own.
Whatever the time of day,
there is something to be
captured, whether it’s a twinkling cold and
icy scene at night or the sun disappearing
behind some stormy clouds. In winter, low
light is often a challenge to get around and
one us photographers really have to think
about. However, modern technology, with
cameras continually improving settings
such as ISO, has made shooting in low
light more flexible, opening up many
more creative opportunities.

So with all that in mind, this month we
challenge you to go and shoot a low-light
landscape. How you approach the theme
is completely up to you, and remember
we’re always happy if you think outside
the box a little! It can be a classic vista
or something totally unexpected, as
long as it’s in a low-light situation.
Get your tripods at the ready – and
make sure you wrap up warm. Fingerless
gloves are essential so that you can adjust
the camera in the cold. A flask of hot tea
on location can also make it a more
enjoyable experience (and a piece of
cake perhaps wouldn’t hurt either).

And the Long Exposure winner is...

Ian Asprey
In Digital Camera 221, we set you the task of shooting an image with a shutter speed setting of one second or longer. So without further
ado, the winner of our long-exposure challenge is Ian Asprey, who sent in this gorgeous seascape. Not only do the light and pastel colours
entice you into the frame, but the strong composition and use of space have been executed to a high standard. Great work, Ian!
