WHY THIS SHOT WORKS
Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye
Foreground: There’s plenty going
on in the foreground to interest
the viewer – particularly the
colour of the water.
Background: The whole image
is framed by the imposing
snow-capped mountain behind,
adding a sense of drama.
Movement: I’ve slowed down the
shutter just enough to show some
movement in the water and add
to the narrative of the image.
Drama: I’ve used a soft ND grad
to bring out some of the drama in
the moody sky above the waterfall.
PRO TIP
SHOOT IN RAW!
I always shoot using raw. This
means I can maximise the
amount of detail I’m capturing
in an image, and gives me greater
control over the image in post-
production. It might mean the
file size is larger, but it’s worth
it for the final outcome.
