THE RULE OF THIRDS
1
The rule of thirds involves mentally dividing up your image
into a 3x3 grid. Important elements should be positioned
along the lines of the grid or at the points where they meet.
It’s a simple but effective rule of thumb.

With any seascape you shoot, it is important to get your
horizon straight. You can use your viewfinder in-screen
to get a perfectly level horizon, or use a spirit level on
your camera. If you get home and have a superb photo
that isn’t level, and you didn’t get the composition
completely perfect in the field, Lightroom has
some powerful tools to help you fix up your images,
especially the Crop and Straighten Tools.

COMPOSITION
Sometimes it’s not what you include,

omposition is
one of the most
important
aspects of
photographing
bodies of water and seascapes.
Conditions can also be very
important, but if you don’t
have a good grasp of how the
elements in your image fit
together, the final product can
be weak and disappointing.
Lens choice is crucial.
Ultra-wide lenses can be
difficult to control when
you’re first starting out. They
encourage you to include
everything in the frame – but
often it’s not what you decide
to include in the frame, it’s
what you decide to leave out.
Consider what is important
to your image, and what isn’t.
To give your images as much
impact as possible, it’s
worth considering if there is
a viable foreground available
to help lead in the viewer.
The composition must be
compelling and have purpose.
