THE GOLDEN RATIO
2
Often posited as creating more
impact than the rule of thirds,
the golden ratio is a mathematical
equation that correlates to
aesthetically pleasing compositions.

WHY THIS SHOT WORKS
Loch Sligachan, Isle of Skye
Breaking the rules: Despite the
rules of thirds dictating that the
horizon should be off-centre, in
this image I have chosen to put
the horizon in the middle.
Reflections: The reason for
positioning the horizon in the
middle is to maximise the reflection
of the dramatic morning sky.
Maximising the drama: Using an
ND grad filter has helped to maintain
the colour and the detail in the sky,
and boost the reflection of the
colour in the water.
Try new locations: I didn’t plan this
shot and didn’t know what I wanted
from this particular morning. Going
out without preconceived notions
meant I was able to photograph
a location that’s rarely captured.
