High-ISO noise reduction

Use this camera function to cut through the
choppiness, at the expense of some sharpness

A relative newcomer to the noise reduction game,
‘multi-shot’ is an option found on some cameras. Here,
a sequence of photos is automatically taken in quick succession,
then combined to average out the noise before the final image
is saved to the memory card. It is designed to give better
results than one full-fat hit of high-strength noise
reduction applied to a single image.
As you can see from these blow-ups, a better level of fine detail
is retained – but there are drawbacks. It’s no good if the subject
or the camera move between shots in the sequence, for example,
and it only works when the camera is set to record JPEG.

Low ISO sensitivities
give you the highest
image quality, but there will
be occasions where you’re
faced with little available
light and are forced to
increase the sensitivity to
get a usable exposure –
pumping up the volume of
noise as a result. Depending
on which mode you are
shooting in, high-ISO noise
reduction can be applied
either automatically by the

camera or manually, in
order to remove some
of this noise.
Unlike long-exposure
noise reduction, this
function only makes a
discernible difference to
JPEGs. While some basic
cameras have merely an
on/off setting, most allow
you to adjust the effect.
The highest setting might
squash the most noise, but
it also reduces sharpness.
