About your free
Star Brush Pack

Your free Star Brush files are supplied
on the disc. To use them, you’ll need
Photoshop CC, or any other software that
supports .abr brush files. There are 16
brushes in total, offering a variety of
starburst lighting effects; and once
they’re installed, you can apply them
to any image with a mouse click.

image-editing skills.

f you have a light source like
a candle flame, a street lamp
or even the sun within a picture,
you can make it look far more
dramatic by having flares
streak out from it in the shape of a star. This
attractive effect occurs naturally when you
stop down your lens to a smaller aperture,
such as f/11 or f/16, but you can also ‘force’
the effect at any aperture by fitting a
‘starburst’ filter over the lens. This is a glass
or resin sheet with a pattern etched into it;
the pattern dictates how many streaks
emanate from the light sources in the picture.
To bring this traditional approach up to date
for the digital age, I’ve created a set of custom
brushes that allow you to add the effect exactly
where you want it. You can vary the number of
streaks by selecting the appropriate brush.
To keep things as flexible as possible, you
can vary the size and intensity of the bursts
with the same controls you’d use on any
brush – and best of all, the entire process
is quick, simple and intuitive.
