Colour boost

Q

What is the best
way to boost the
colours of my
shots in Lightroom?
Dave Hurst

A

You can tackle colour in
several ways in Lightroom
(or Adobe Camera Raw),
Dave. The first is to do it via
the universal sliders in the Basic Panel.
There are two sliders of interest:
Saturation and Vibrance. I tend to leave
Saturation alone most of the time: its
effect is overpowering, as it just boosts
all the colours within the scene and can
look unnatural. Vibrance only boosts the
colours within the scene that need some
extra oomph, so this is the one to use.
Even then, don’t go mad: just increase
it enough to make a positive difference,
without making your image look like
it’s from a dodgy 1970s colour TV!
Your second option is to target the
different colours through the HSL Panel
(Hue, Saturation and Luminance). Unless
you want to alter the actual colour, avoid
the Hue slider and concentrate on the
Saturation and Luminance sliders.
With subtle use of the Saturation slider,
you can give individual colour channels
a boost. Playing with the Luminance slider
will lighten or darken that specific colour,
and that alone can make quite a difference
within your photo.

Saturation can work
subtly if you target
individual channels
in the HSL Panel.

Vibrance boosts
subdued hues
without affecting
brighter colours.
