Information is still thin on the
ground regarding the upcoming
Threadripper 3000 series of
CPUs, but we know AMD is
ready to go big: The high-end
3970WX and 3990WX chips rock
an almighty 64 cores and 128
threads. Plus, a recent leak
mentioned “dual socket support.”
Two Threadrippers on one TR4
motherboard? Oh my. The same
leak also mentioned a “Black
Edition” of the 3990WX, available
with a special-edition NZXT case.
We don’t have any news on
base or boost clocks, but a base of
5.0GHz wouldn’t be untoward on
the higher-spec CPUs. The pricing
is also unknown, but the $1,799
price tag on the 2990WX provides
some idea; they won’t be cheap.
Intel does have a response—
sort of. While it’s not offering
dual-socket wizardry, its leading
CPU is getting an upgrade. The
i9-9900KS is effectively a binned
version of the i9-9900K; cherry-
picking the best chips to produce a
new HEDT standard. It’ll demand
serious cooling, but its eight cores
can hit a simultaneous 5.0GHz
turbo clock. Promising, but hardly
revolutionary. While Ice Lake
might have hit laptops, 10nm
HEDT processors from Intel still
look like a distant dream, leaving
the field wide open for AMD to

all products under “Filter by date and products.” Then select
