12 megapixels, with an apertureoff/2,

OIS andafield-of-view equivalenttoa

52mm lens onacamera withafull-fram

sensor.All three camerasare capable o

recording4Kvideo at 60fps.

Still image quality isdownrightsupe

Photoswe’ve takenwiththe iPhone

weresharper and more detail-packedthan

thosefrom both theiPhone XS Max and

the Google Pixel3XL(Shopper379), although

the colourbalance ontheiPhone 11 Pro’s

shotsisalittlewarmerthantheXSMax.

Low-lightperformancetakesaparticularly

big leapforward,thankstothe newnight

mode.SimilartoNight Sight on Google’s Pixel

handsets, thisisspecificallyforcapturing

higher-detail shotsinthe darkwith minimal

visualnoise.Andit worksbeautifully: colours

are more naturalistic, detailsare sharper and

there’s less visualnoise in finelytextured

areas than the Pixel3XLcan deliver.

DIFFERENTVIEWPOINTS

Videoquality isfantasticaswell.Footagefrom

the maincameraiscrisp,neutralincolour and

packed with details, and video stabilisation

works beautifullyat 4K and60fps.Applehas

now extendedtheabilitytoswitchbetween

lenses asyouzoomin aswell,whichis a

feature thatwouldpreviously onlywork at up

to30fpsat4K. As before,however,ithasn’t

been perfectly implemented.There’saclear

jump-step as the view transitions from one

sensortothenext,withanobviouschange

in colourbalanceandquality.

This isasmallnegativepoint, however,and

itttissspppooossssssibbbleeetttooossstttooopppitttfrooomjjjuuumpppingggbbbeeetttweeeeeen

camerasbyusing theLock Camera mode in

settings. Otherwise,videorecording onthe

iPhone 11 Proisthe bestyou can geton a

smartphone,especiallynow thatApple’s

extendeddynamic rangefeatureisavailablein

the 60fps 4Kvideomode as well as 30fps.

In thismode,the iPhone 11 Pro’s camera

captures 4Kvideo at 12 0fps internally,with

each alternatingframeshot at different

exposure levels and then combinedto

produceapseudo-HDReffect.It’s subtler

thanyoumight expect,butit does balance

out the bright anddark areasoffootage in a

surprisinglyeffectivemanner.

GAININGCONTROL

Therehavebeenimprovementson the

software side,too.Aspartofthe upgradeto

iOS13,Apple hasgiventhe user interfacea

newlickofpaint, withanewzoom graphic,

while someofthephotooptions–aspect ratio

andlive photo,forinstance–havemoved

from thetop leftofthescreentoanew

position, revealedbyasimpleswipeupfrom

the bottomofthescreen in thecamera app.

Another niceaddition here is the ability

tohave thecameracapture images from

the ultrawide andprimarycameras

sssimuuultttaaaneeeooouuussslyyy...Theeen,,,if yyyooouuugggoooin aaandddeeedddittt

hoto,youcan recompose and recrop

g thewider angle shot.

Thisis typicalofthe whole iOS 13

pgrade,infact. There’snothing

particularlydramatic initslistof

upgrades and newfeatures, but there

arequitealotofchanges thathavethe

potentialtopositivelyaffecttheway

youuse yourphoneonadailybasis.

Oneofourfavouritetweaks is the

ability,atlast,tolong-pressonthe

Wi-Fi icon in theControlCentre menu

fordirectaccesstotheWi-Fisettings

menu.Youcanswitchbetween Wi-Fi

etworks here aswell.

Face ID issupposedlyfaster,too,but we

n’t noticed itbeingmuch quickerthan

ousgenerations. It stillworks pretty

ly,however,and weneverfelt the need

tobe anyquicker.Itwould be niceto

have at least the optionofafingerprint reader,

but Apple is clearlystickingtoits guns with

Face ID,for thetimebeingatleast.

RICHESFOR RICHES

Ultimately,the only worryabouttheiPhone 11

Pro is the price:youcan get Android handsets

that are 90% as goodfor hundredsofpounds

less.Atthe same time,however,there’s no

getting around it being an absolutely

incredible smartphone,onewithcameras and

performance beyond compare andabattery

lifethatfinallystandsuptoits rivals.

If you’re an Appledevotee andyou don’t

mindspending as muchonaphoneasona

second-hand car,this is theonetobuy.
