because they’re
really so far from it.
Even if such produc-
tion-based cars ran
slightly slower on the
tracks than the race
cars do, they certainly
run fast enough! They
would continually get
better, faster, and
safer due to racing
requirements. And
all that improved
tech would trickle
down to production
cars almost immedi-
ately instead of years
later (if ever). Racing
improves the breed!

a truism.

SMARTIES
I read Daniel Pund’s
July column with
amusement. I’m
guessing he is a
220-pound, ham-
burger-eating, milk-
and beer-drinking
American who has no
experience driving in
cities. His article is
full of false informa-
tion about the Smart
Fortwo. The first-gen-
eration model he
drove is rated at 3.
litres of fuel con-
sumption per 100
kilometers (bear with
me, I’m Canadian).
He says the range
is about 190 miles,
which is impossible.
In 2011, he found the
Smart ED had a range
insufficient for many
daily commutes.
The average daily
commute is 30 kilo-
meters. He says it’s
slower than a 1981
Chevy Chevette. It
accelerated to 100
km/h (62 mph) in
seven seconds with
electric drive and
15 seconds in the
gasoline version. Top
speed for both the
electric and gasoline


Fortwo is 160 km/h,
which is 100 mph.

got right is that
Pund eats

Pund is right regard-
ing the Fortwo—what
a horrible transmis-
sion—but he missed
something: This was
the only car that
delivered the most
value when it was
not moving. Bruce
Springsteen and the
rest of us may have
been born to run, but
Smart was born to
park. Pick any city
with a very high con-
gestion level and you’ll
see hordes of these
things shoehorned
into every possible
space. Ever been to
Rome, which has, like,
seven parking spaces?
Smarties everywhere.
I’m on my second
Smart and, indeed,
driving it is murder,
but I know that
wherever I go, I can
find a parking spot
and watch the SUVs
and pickups circle
the block in Valet Fee
Avoidance mode. I’m
not sorry to see Smart
cars go, but—in a dif-
ferent sense—they
were great at staying.
