  1. CHARTING THE CHANGES. CAR AND DRIVER. OCT/2019

New Cars for 20 20 BMW — Cadillac

Bugatti

Chiron: The 1500-hp quad-
turbo megamissile is now three
years old, which means we’re
in the slow-trickle-of-special-
editions phase. Following the
$3.3 million Chiron Sport and
$5.8 million Divo (now dead)
are the $8.9 million Centodieci
and the one-of-one $12.5 mil-
lion La Voiture Noire, which
Bugatti asserts is the most
expensive new car of all time.

X3: BMW appends its storied
M to the X3 name and puts a
473-hp turbocharged inline-six
underhood. The M Competi-
tion model takes the engine
tune a step further and rallies
503 ponies.

X4: This fastback X3 gets the
same M and M Competition
variants as its more conven-
tionally styled brother.

X5: An M50i model arrives
later this year and churns out
523 horsepower from the twin-
turbo 4.4-liter V-8, 67 more
than the xDrive50i.

X6: BMW sells just a few
hundred X6s a month, so it’s
more of a design ambassador
than a crucial part of BMW’s
sales portfolio. That design
was updated this year for the
X6’s third generation and
features a larger grille, sharper
sheetmetal creases, and either
a 335-hp inline-six or a 523-hp
V-8. Also of note, there will be
no M model for 2020.

X7: This SUV receives the
same M50i engine and treat-
ment as the X5.

Z4: See review, page 51.

Minor trim changes: 2-series,
4-series, X1
Unchanged: i3, i8, M2 (see
comparison test, page 20),
M4, X2
Dead: 6-series/Alpina B6/M6

Buick

Encore: The optional 153-hp
turbocharged inline-four is no
longer available, leaving the
138-hp turbo four as the sole
powerplant.

Encore GX: Slightly larger
than its namesake, the GX
slots between the regular
Encore and the Envision. If the
China-market version is any
indication, we might get a CVT
for front-drivers, a nine-speed
automatic in all-wheel-drive
models, and the choice
between two turbo three-cylin-
ders when the GX goes on sale
early next year.

rear wheels, but all-wheel drive
is available on every variant,
including the V. The CT5-V
uses the same V-6, but it’s
bumped up to 355 horse-
power. That model also gets
an electronically controlled
limited-slip rear differential,
Brembo front brakes, and
magnetorheological dampers.
Even so, this V is a far cry from
the 640-hp CTS-V supersedan
that ended production earlier
this year. Expect a big-power,
track-ready variant to follow,
probably equipped with a more
potent version of the Black-

wing twin-turbo DOHC 4.2-liter
V-8 found in the CT6-V.

CT6: Cadillac drops the 2.0-
liter four and 3.0-liter six from
the engine lineup but offsets
the loss by offering a detuned
version of the Blackwing V-8
found in the CT6-V. (For more
on that model, see page 56.)

XT5: The same 237-hp
turbocharged 2.0-liter four
that’s found in the CT5 now
serves as the base engine for
Luxury and Premium Luxury
XT5s. The 310-hp 3.6-liter V-6

Cadillac CT 4 : It’s out with the old ATS and in
with the new CT4. Well, sort of. The CT4 is a
heavily refreshed ATS with a new name. A CT4-V

Cadillac

CT5: Replacing the CTS, the
CT5 is sized to square off
with the BMW 5-series and
Mercedes E-class but priced to
compete with the 3-series and
C-class. A 237-hp turbo 2.0-
liter four comes standard and
a 335-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter
V-6 making 400 pound-feet of
torque is optional. A 10-speed
automatic sends torque to the

’ELLO, M 8
Like the M5, the M8
packs a twin-turbo V-8
making 600 horsepower
in base trim and 617
in Competition guise.
Both versions come with
all-wheel drive and an
eight-speed automatic.
Keep your eyes peeled
for a four-door Gran
Coupe model, which we
expect to debut later this
year or early next.
