Mazda CX-30: Mazda is adding a fourth SUV
to its lineup to sit between the tiny CX-3 and
the compact CX-5. As the second model on Mazda’s
new platform, the awkwardly named CX-30 shares
its underpinnings—including, presumably, a
torsion-beam rear axle—with the 2019 Mazda 3.
After years of teasing, Mazda still refuses to say
whether it will sell its Skyactiv-X spark-controlled
compression-ignition gas engine in the U.S. (it has
recently been cleared for sale in Europe and Japan),
so we anticipate the CX-30 will debut with either
the 148-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder used in the smaller
CX-3 or the 186-hp 2.5-liter used in the 3. A six-speed
automatic will drive the front wheels and all-wheel
drive should be optional.

600LT: The 600LT Spider’s
name is pretty self-explana-
tory: It is the roofless version
(Spider) of the new-for-last-
year 600LT (LT meaning
Longtail, McLaren’s perform-
ance moniker). It is a solid step
up from the less hard-core
McLaren 570S Spider thanks
to its aerodynamic addenda,

Lotus has confirmed that
a new sports car based
on the Evora is in the
works and may appear in
late 2020. The as-yet-un-
named car is intended to
carry the brand until an
all-new series of vehicles,
including an SUV and
EV models, arrives a few
years down the road.

and 30-hp advantage. Powered
by a 592-hp twin-turbo 3.8-
liter V-8, the car is capable of
201 mph with the top up and
“only” 196 mph with it lowered.
The coupe sees no changes.

GT: What separates this car
from the rest of the McLaren
family is its overt focus
on comfort. Designed as a
grand tourer, the GT features
a yawning, conventionally
hinged hatch. The adaptive
suspension is tuned for a
serene ride, even on 20-inch
front and 21-inch rear wheels.
And the 612-hp twin-turbo 4.0-
liter V-8 is tweaked to deliver
its power for easy cruising.

Speedtail: Until the Speed-
tail came along, F1s from the
1990s were the only choice for
a thin slice of moneyed, overly
particular people bent on
driving a roadgoing McLaren
with an odd number of seats.
But it’s not just the unusual
driver-centered three-place
seating arrangement that
the Speedtail and the F1
share; they also have similar
missions. McLaren’s latest
poster car neither zigs nor
zags like the track-devouring
Senna; instead, it’s designed
primarily to be rare and
expensive and to travel at
high speed. Very high speed.
With a low-drag body and
1035 horsepower from the
gas-electric hybrid powertrain,
the Speedtail’s maximum
velocity is a claimed 250 mph.
Now to find two companions
adventurous enough to flank
you for the attempt.

Evora GT: Arriving to
carry the stateside torch in
the wake of the Evora 400’s
departure, the Evora GT
features a Toyota- sourced
3.5-liter V-6 that’s super-
charged to the tune of 416
horsepower. Offering an
increase of 16 horses over the
Evora 400, it mates to either
a six-speed manual or a six-
speed automatic; when paired
with the latter, the V-6 makes
332 pound-feet of torque
compared with 317 pound-feet
with the stick. The manual,
however, brings a Torsen limit-
ed-slip differential as a reward
for doing the right thing. That
model also boasts a higher top
speed. Lotus claims a zero-to-
60-mph time of 3.8 seconds
no matter the gearbox, which
can be quite invigorating in a
small, 3200-pound car.


but company representatives
have refused to say when. As
of this writing, the diesel still
lacks EPA certification in the
6, which, as we’ve seen before
with this engine, can be a
deal breaker or major delay
maker. If history has taught
us anything, it’s that no one
should be waiting around for a
diesel-powered Mazda sedan.
