Nissan — Tesla

ranges up to $36,795 for the
top-tier Touring XT model.

Tesla

Model 3: Has Tesla delivered
on its promise of selling a
sub-$40,000 version of its
all-electric sedan for the
masses? Not according to the
company’s website, which—at
the time of publication—shows
the Standard Range Plus
version starting at $40,190
as the cheapest Model 3.
But walk into one of the
brick-and-mortar stores and
Tesla salespeople will claim
that a software-limited (and
limited-availability) version
of the 3, called the Standard
Range, starts at $36,200.
They’re likely to upsell you
anyway. And additional pricing
and trim-level adjustments are
sure to come, as Tesla seems
to change its mind every few
weeks regarding how much the
Model 3 should cost.

Model S: Elon Musk shot down
rumors that this aging electric
four-door would soon get a
significant design and tech-
nology update, saying that the
model will see “only a series of
minor ongoing changes.” We
suspect that increased range
is on the Model S’s horizon,
though. With the current Long
Range model already claiming
370 miles on a single charge,
it seems the most likely
candidate to hit Musk’s goal of
selling a 400-mile EV.

Model Y: The logical next
step for Tesla is to launch a
compact crossover, which is
what the Model Y will be if it
actually enters production
(currently slated to begin
in late 2020). The Model Y
is essentially a tall Model
3 with more cargo space, a
higher seating position, and
an optional third row. Range
takes a hit; Tesla claims the
all-wheel-drive Long Range
Model Y will go 280 miles on
a charge, 30 miles less than
the equivalent Model 3. It will
also cost more, starting at just
under $50,000 (for now). But

Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman: With the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder,
which are powered by a new naturally aspirated 4.0-liter six-cylinder, Porsche
is showing that it remembers the joy of six. Good for 414 horses and 309 pound-feet
of torque, this engine pairs exclusively with a six-speed manual in these vehicles. The
Spyder is slightly less costly than the GT4; both models hover around the $100,000
mark. Before the end of 2020, we should also see 718 T versions of the Boxster and
Cayman, which will follow the formula set by the 911 Carrera T—a combination of
already available go-fast parts bundled together for less than you’d pay to equip the
car with them individually. Available only on 2.0-liter (non-S) versions of the Box-
