coulddoa lotworsethanheadforthe
RannochMoorandGlencoeregion.It’sonly
a two-hourdrivefromGlasgowbutyou’ll
feellikeyou’vebeentransportedtoanother
world,whereherdsofwilddeergrazeand
goldeneaglessoarmajesticallyoverhead.
It’s wildandbarren,sparselypopulatedand
hauntinglybeautiful.Bestof all,there’sa
main road– theA 82 – cuttingstraight across
RannochMooranddownthroughGlencoe,
soaccessis easy. There'snoneedtotrekfor
milesthroughperilousbogland(unlessyou
reallywantto!). Simplyparkyourcar,jump
outandwithin minutes,orevenseconds,be
shootingsomeof themostdramaticscenery
you’re likely to see anywhere in the United

RannochMooris sixtysquaremilesof
desolationfashionedbynatureandringed
by mountains. At1, 000 feetabovesea-level,
it’sa vast,flatlabyrinthof bogs, marshes,
stagnantwatercourses,lochs andlochains.
Drivingacrossthe mooren-routetothe
headof Glencoe,it'shardnottofeeljusta
little uneasy. Thesummitsof theBlack Mount
peaksaremoreoftenthannothiddenbylow
cloud.Peat-darkenedpoolsliehalf-hidden
amongthe reeds andheathers.Stuntedtrees
bracethemselveslikewizenedoldmen
againstthe wind.But nomatterhow
menacingit appears,RannochMoor'sspell
will draw you backtimeandtimeagain.It's
one of our nation's most beautiful areas.
