W
ITH THE TUMBLING value of
the pound, making foreign
travel more expensive, and
fantastic summer weather for
the second year in a row, the
humble British seaside is seeing something
of a renaissance. Visitor numbers are steadily
rising and many of our favourite coastal
towns are busier than they’ve been for years.
And while photographers have always been
attracted to these locations, they too are
growing in number and can be seen
throughout the day with their tripods poised
and ready to capture the beaches and piers
using a range of different techniques.
Piers have long been a staple feature of
the British coastline, with some adopting
the role of being the most popular landmark
in a seaside town; Southwold, Clevedon,
Bournemouth, Blackpool and Weston-
Super-Mare to name but a few, are all home
to well-known and much-loved Victorian
piers. Even the derelict and burned down
West Pier in Brighton is arguably more
famous, and indeed much more
photographed than the Palace Pier on the
same beach, which is still standing.
Our reader, Bedfordshire-based Chris
Hobbs, has been interested in photography
for six years and has developed his skills in
landscape, seascape and urban photography,
and has built a sizeable Facebook following.
Chris devotes his time between his young
family, photography and fishing, which sees
him enjoying the outdoors in a more relaxed
manner but with equally early starts and late
finishes as his photography.
Despite living just a few hour’s drive from
the north Norfolk coast, Chris had never shot
at Crom er B each , so this was th e p er fe c t
opportunity to explore a new location. The
weather forecast predicted a little cloud and
sunny intervals late in the day, so things
looked promising for sunset and a classic
shot of the pier at high tide.
