CHALLENGE 1:
MONO LONG E XPOSURE
After driving to the coast, I met Chris at the
campsite just outside of Cromer where he
was staying and, after brief introductions,
we jumped into my car and headed straight
to the beach. It was a warm, sunny day but
with high winds that were forecast to die
down as the day went on, and with the tide
out at this time, the original plan was to
shoot some Intentional Camera Movement
(ICM) images under and around the pier,
because this technique was one that
wouldn’tbeaffectedbythewind.

We started off under the pier and quickly
realised that the side lighting was creating far
too much contrast, so rather than trying to
flog a dead horse, I suggested that we take
a walk along the beach to see what other
opportunities presented themselves.
The wind continued to blow strong and
whipped up the sand around us, but as
we stood watching the tide coming in, we
realised that the wind was making it come
in at least twice as fast as usual. There were
few clouds in the sky at this point, but we
could see some in the distance that were
heading our way and would possibly add

featureless blue sky. As we began walking
again, we spotted some old groynes – just
a few stumps really – sticking out of the
sand with the tide fast approaching,
so I suggested that we might be more
successful focusing on black & white long
exposures and to leave the ICM challenge
until later in the day when the light became
softer in the late afternoon.
Chris had to work quickly to find a
composition because the wooden stumps
weren’t tall and would be submerged by
the incoming tide in a matter of minutes.
He attached his camera to his tripod and
moved backwards and forwards, left and
right to find a composition he was happy
with, and once he did, he quickly attached
his Lee Filters Big Stopper ten-stop ND
filter and began shooting. After just a few
minutes the stumps were submerged, and
we assessed his image on the LCD screen of
his Canon EOS 7D.
