Craig McDean’s world is literally cars
and girls. A former car mechanic, he
put down his wrench and picked up
his camera to make a huge impact
in the world of fashion.
Manual is the follow-up to his book
Amber, Guinevere and Kate and
showcases 20 years of work. Beautifully packaged
featuring a print of model Audrey Tchekova and an
embossed title tag, Manual is a high-octane visual
barrage of classic automobile imagery with inventive
fashion frames. It is only broken up by a central ‘essay’
on McDean, penned by the Guggenheim Museum’s
Lisa Naftolin, which unpicks his work and explains the
juxtaposition of the imagery in the book. McDean
may not be as well known as some of his UK fashion
contemporaries but his tendency to shoot ‘gritty’ rather
than ‘pretty’ marks him out as someone with a unique

THIS exhibition revisits the important contribution Tony
Ray-Jones made to British documentary photography.
In 2012, Martin Parr revisited Ray-Jones’s contact
sheets to fi nd previously unseen images. These new
discoveries are on display alongside iconic early images,
as well as vintage prints from the Martin Parr
Foundation collection.
Parr says, ‘Tony Ray-Jones was one of my initial
inspirations. His imagery showed me what was possible
photographing my own country.’ As well as the
exhibition a new book – the fi rst Tony Ray-Jones book
in print for many years – is published to coincide with
the show. If you have an interest in black & white
photography, social documentary work or just spotting
the opportune moment, this is a show not to be
