Capturing universal emotions is at the heart of Noell Oszvald’s minimalist self-portraits
in which she uses herself as subject within the landscape. Here Elizabeth Roberts talks to
her about her work and how it came to the attention of the fine art photography world.

Elizabeth Roberts Your images are pared
down to the minimum of composition, line
and tone and you use your own body within
this. Can you say more about why and how
this way of working came about?

Noell Oszvald Back in 2012 there was
a community of young and aspiring

photographers on Flickr undertaking a project
called 365, in which you had to produce one
picture per day for a year. I longed to be a
part of that group of people without having
to commit to the year-long challenge. For me,
the intention was to be able to connect and
communicate with the like-minded, a circle
of creatives with a passion for photography.

It was an inspiring time.
I decided to share my work online, here
and there, and my current artistic process
slowly began to unfold. The picture with the
tree (Untitled 1) being the first piece in which
I finally felt I had a foundation to build on, and
I found my direction. As I grow more skilled
