My aim is to set up concepts using the
human body as a base, while not making it
the main focus of the picture. The result is a
still image that is built around a person, but all
parts of the whole are of the same importance.
I reduce my pictures to content, composition
and form because this minimalist approach
allows me to put equal emphasis on the idea
behind the work and the entirety of the image.
ER Would you say that your work is in
some way autobiographical?
NO In the sense that these pictures are
mainly self-portraits my work is indeed
autobiographical, as I know that an emotion
I've experienced personally is one that I can
genuinely capture in an image. However, the
kind of emotions I try to convey through my
pictures aren’t necessarily complex or even
uniquely mine, ones that could be traced
back to an eminently specific occasion that
occurred during my life. These emotions are
the ones that are universally felt, something
we all experience at some point in our
day-to-day lives.

ER How do you go about setting up, or
staging, an image. Do you, for instance,
make drawings?
NO While my pictures are thoroughly
structured and conceptual, many are
spontaneously thought out on the spot and
later refined on the computer. I sometimes
draw simple sketches and take a quick test
photo prior to shooting to perfect the scene.
Whether a photo-shoot is improvised or
well prepared, unpredictable and unplanned
nuances will occur which I find to be beneficial
in breaking the rigidness of the controlled
composition in a subtle way.
ER How much of the work is in
post-production?
NO Post-production is an important aspect
of my process and plays a role in giving
certain characteristics and attributes to the
images that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to
get in-camera when I personify the model and
the photographer at the same time. There are
pictures that require basic touch up and some
other compositions are more enhanced.
