ROBERT FRANK DIES

RARE LEICA

HIGH-END

Robert Frank, one of the key photographers
of the 20th century, has died at the age of 94.
Born in Switzerland in 1924, he moved
to the US in 1947 and began working as a
fashion photographer. His work appeared
in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and
Vogue, and seven of his pictures were shown
in the hugely popular exhibition The Family
of Man, which was curated by Edward
Steichen and seen by around nine million
people on its global tour.
In the 1950s Frank embarked on a series
of road trips across the US, taking 28,
pictures. He chose 83 of these for his book,
The Americans, published in France in 1958
and the US a year later. The pictures showed
the sometimes lonely life of many ordinary
Americans and has became one of the most
influential
photobooks
of the
century.
A 50th
anniversary
edition was
published by
Steidl in 2008.

An extremely rare Leica camera is coming
up for auction.
The double-stroke, black paint Leica M
was delivered to the Magnum Photo Agency
in Paris in 1958. Factory delivery records
show only 90 of these pre-series cameras
were sent out before the first official batch
of black M3 rangefinders in 1959.
The serial number on the camera records
it as the 15th black paint M3 to have been
produced. The camera has a conservative
estimate of £60,000 to £80,000 but could
go for much more.
Also up for auction is a rare daguerreotype
by an anonymous photographer. The picture
is one of the earliest images of the Royal
Exchange in London and was taken in about

  1. It is estimated to fetch between
    £3,000 and £5,000.
The auction is at Chiswick Auctions in
South Kensington, London, on 14 November.
