illed as the “largest gathering
of fashion creatives in the UK”,
the fundraising event Fashion
Aid takes place at the Royal
Albert Hall, London.
Featuring the combined talents of
18 fashion designers, 35 hairdressers,
60 make-up artists, 120 dressers,
125 models and anyone who was
anyone in the entertainment biz,
Fashion Aid was the rag trade’s
version of Live Aid.
Dreamed up by North East London
Poly student Fameed Khalique as part
of his degree course, he managed to
convince Live Aid founder Bob Geldof
that a fashion equivalent could be a
winner. Superstar attendees included
Madonna, George Michael, Ringo
Starr and Barbara Bach, Boy George,
Jerry Hall and Grace Jones. Also in
attendance were Madness, Michael
Caine, Eurythmics, Katharine Hamnett,
Zandra Rhodes, Steve Norman of
Spandau Ballet, Tina Turner, Anjelica
Huston, Paul King and Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher.
This glittering throng was, however,
easily overshadowed by the climax of
the night – a faux-wedding ceremony
between Freddie Mercury and actress
Jane Seymour. Resplendent in a white
lace dress tied up with bows, topped
off by a fl oral crown of daisies and
lilies, Seymour glided down the
catwalk to plant a passionate kiss on
Freddie’s lips. The Queen frontman
then sashayed back along the runway
clutching the bridal bouquet and
showering his adoring fans with
blossoms. By way of a stark contrast,
at a post-event party in Soho’s
Groucho Club, a dinner of sausage
and mash was served up to the guests.
