WHO IS THE MOST UNDERRATED ARTIST OR GROUP OF THE 80S?

Will Simpson has
written about music for longer
than he can remember for
newspapers and magazines,
including the likes of Long Live
Vinyl, Metro, Guitarist and
TheBig Issue. He lives in a house in South-
East London that’s notable for having a clock
in every room. This month, he fi nds out what
makes Mick Hucknall tick in our exclusive
Simply Red interview.

Best known for editing
Teletext’s music pages
Planet Sound in the
2000s, John Earls
has also written about
pop for the Sunday
People, News Of The World, the
Daily Star and the NME. This month,
he interviews cover stars OMD, Then
Jerico’s Mark Shaw, Prince’s inner circle
and helms our reissues section.

Before turning to writing,
Felix Rowe extensively
toured North America,
including an appearance on
Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Career
highlights include performing
with Chad Smith and sharing a Mars bar
with George Martin. Felix has written for
Long Live Vinyl, Clash, Discover Britain and
The Artist. For Classic Pop this issue, he
interviews The Brand New Heavies.

SOUNDBITES
*1 ”These dance music innovators were
peerless at the end of the 80s. Hopefully,
new album Transmission Suite will put a
spotlight on them once again.”
*2 ”Their effervescent, multicoloured cartoon
pop should have crowned them as the
British B-52s.”
*3 ”For their 13 albums of rock-solid future-
pop and they still haven’t stopped.”
*4 ”A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul
always steal the Daisy Age hip-hop headlines
but this trio were fi rst to fuse hip-hop and jazz
and set the lyrical standard of the decade.”
*5 “Her music, performances, videos, remixes
etc have had much more of an infl uence than
she’s given credit for.”
*6 ”They looked great, sounded fresh,
fantastic samples and Megatop Phoenix, what
an album! Forty years of British pop culture
condensed into one mad 45 minutes.”
*7 ”Hull’s fi nest indie guitar wizards, whose
second album, Tales Of The Expected, is an
unsurpassable feast of jangling melancholy.”
