A BRIEF HISTORY OF CINEMA


Cinema has, of course, had a long and often
eventful history littered with upheavals, some of
which were accompanied by warnings of doom
regarding the potential effect on the medium
of film itself. The earliest permanent movie
theater can be traced back to the launch of the
Pittsburgh-based Nickelodeon in 1905, where
short, silent films were shown via a projector for
a five-cent entry fee. Since then, we have seen
a wide array of major technical advances in the
cinema world.


It’s not hard of think of examples – including
sound, visual effects and the computer-
generated imagery popularized by the first Toy
Story film back in 1995. More recently, we’ve
