In a separate panel of movie exhibitors
interviewed by IndieWire, Neal Block, head
of distribution at Magnolia Pictures, insisted
that some of the recent high-profile flops in
theaters “were seriously overambitious – these
were wide releases for smaller-scaled films
without stars.” Meanwhile, Dennis Lim, director
of programming at Film at Lincoln Center,
voiced the theory that simply big-budget
Hollywood – rather than cinema as an art form



  • is in trouble.

In much the same way as Cameron helped to
bring 3D into the cinematic mainstream, at least
before this technology’s popularity declined
in Avatar’s wake, we could expect the man to
weave his magic on the next generation of
cinematic technology. Referring to the practice
of filmmaking, Cameron remarked: “The
technology has changed but the basics of the
job haven’t. It is still about storytelling, about
juxtaposing images, about creating a feeling
with images and music.”


Nonetheless, one technology that could
help directors to do that in a genuinely fresh
