planning will only get
you so far in photography

  • sometimes the weather just
    has other ideas. persevere,
though, and you can still get
    remarkable results, as Shaun
    Hykel (shaunsphotos.com)
    showcases here.
    “i ’ve always been interested
in photography, but it w asn’t
until about four years ago that
i got my first DSlR. i soon
    found my passion was in

seascapes – i find the process
very therapeutic. pin Mill in
Suffolk is a great location,
and a focal point for many
photographers. it offers
a selection of beached boats
that have been left to decay.
i’d v isited pin Mill previously,
so i had an idea of what to
expect. the tide was just right,
with a f orecast of middle-to-
low clouds and a light wind

  • perfect shooting conditions.

“t hen when i arrived at
the l ocation, i saw that the
forecast was a little off,
with much lower cloud than
expected, poor visibility and
a f oreboding drizzle hanging
in t he air. arriving early, i had
enough time to take stock
of t he conditions and set
up. i put my camera on an
aperture of f/8 with an 8-stop
nD filter to give me a 13sec
exposure – long enough to

give a ni cetextureto thewater
fr om the wind and movement in
the clouds. in post-processing,
i felt it needed more punch
as the conditions had let me
down. i tweaked the exposure
and contrast in li ghtroom,
then i ncreased the saturation
and added a little clarity.”

tip
Use an
nD filter
attaching an nD filter will
allow you to get a much
slower shutter speed,
even in the brightest
conditions.
