I began to focus on shootIng fa shIon
in my final year at university. after exploring a range
of photographic styles in the past, I was certain that
I wanted to progress with fashion photography.
the main draw is the sense of creative energy and
teamwork involved in this genre, and how fashion
can be used to create visually interesting imagery.
having grown up in the countryside, the natural
landscape has always been a predominant feature in
my work. I enjoy working in the studio, but I prefer the
sense of freedom you can have with a natural landscape
and how it can be used to create a narrative. themes of
natural authenticity are also portrayed through my use
of lighting as well as my approach to photographing
models. generally, I shoot with ambient light and
a reflector to create a soft appearance. When lighting
is difficult, I will combine artificial and ambient
lighting to have more control.
I aim to capture models in a candid way so I try not
to set people up in poses too much and prefer to just
let stuff happen. I often work with a team of people
such as stylists, designers and make-up – I enjoy this
element to fashion photography as it allows me to meet
other creative people who share my interests. ahead of
a shoot I like to collaborate on ideas with the team to
create a strong visual approach.
Recently, I’ve been concentrating on building my
portfolio and working with new people. I would like
to assist a photographer or complete an internship to
gain more experience across the industry, and also
to explore film photography in more detail. I love the
soft, grainy quality that’s achieved with film. I have
recently acquired a Pentax K1000 that I bring along
to shoots to capture both digital and film content.
My aim is to try medium-format and build up a large
portfolio of imagery. In addition to photography,
I’m increasingly interested in exploring movies and
the moving image. creating fashion films is something
that I have always wanted to attempt as a way of
developing my creative storytelling.

Blending a retro vibe with a

contemporary twist, Joanna
Walker creates wonderful

natural-light fashion shoots.
