Hamilton’s routeto victory inMexicowas
considerably helpedby Max Verstappen putting
himself out of contention. Having won the last two
races inMexic o, the Dutchman looked favourite
again when he was fastestin qualifying. But when
Valtteri Bottas crashed on hisfi nal run (at the last
corner)Verstappen made troublefor himself.
Having gone quicker on hisown fi nal lap, despite
a yellowfl ag for Bottas’s crash,Verstappen was
notably truculentwhen questioned about his
actions in the post-qualifying press conference.
Asked if he backed offfor the shunt, he replied:
“It didn’t really look like it, did it? No.” A little later
he wasremindedthat he should slow downfor a
yellow andadded: “I think we all know what a yellow
fl ag means.” When the safety aspectwas brought

up he said belligerently:“Do we have togo there?”
The FIA decided itwouldgo there andhit Max
with a three-place grid penalty.At the start ,
Hamiltonwas squeezed onto the grassby Vettel on
the runto Turn 1. Under brakingfor the fi rst corner,
Verstappen divedinside Hamilton to try to claim
third. The pairavoidedcontact, but both hadto cut
across the grassto recover their positions.
“I braked intoTurn 1, and all of a sudden Max is
alongside me,” saidHamilton. “If you’ve seen races
before, I always leave Max a lot of space – it’s the
smartest thing you can do. Butthere wasn’t alot
of spaceto give him. I think he had anoversteer
momentor s omething and then I got a massive hit
from behind. Then I nearlytook him out...”
On lapfour, Verstappen dived inside Bottas in the
stadium section and asthe Mercedes triedto avoid
contact, the front wing cutVerstappen’s right rear
tyre which effectively put him out of therace. He
pitted and made a recovery driveto fi nish sixth.

“It was a painfulfor us,” saidteam boss Andreas
