orchestrated aseries of donuts.They sent tyre smoke

pouring into the grandstands, packed with cheering fans.

Race winnerLewis Hamilton led the pirouettes,

accompaniedby second-placed SebastianVettel and

Fernando Alonso – who was nowherenear the podium,

but had recentlyannounced his departurefrom F1. Alonso

fi nished 11th and managed to incur threefi ve-second time

penaltiesfor cutting the chicanes onhis fi nal laps!

Thefuturistic-lookingYas Marina circuit providesa

Fittingly, the start of therace coincides with sunset so the

fi nal 55 racing laps ofthe year are held underfl oodlights.

Since the event joined the F1 calendar in 2009,Yas Marina

has established itself asthe principalvenue for the curtain-

closer. It’shos ted seven of the lastten seasonfi nales.

The circuit itself is two-thirds high-speed, characterised

by long straights and tricky chicanes, while thefi nal sector

of the lap is a slower, moretechnical challengefor the

drivers, as the track windsaround– and underneath – the

Yas Hotel.Temperatures are still hot during the day at this

time of year, but can drop as much as 15ºC once the sun

has set, whichcan cause huge swings in tyre behaviour.
