FEATURES
The biggest sacrifice is
the lack of a viewfinder,
but the 4K video crop is
also disappointing

BUILD QUALITY
The plastic feel and the
absence of a grip on
the front of the M200
fail to impress

QUALITY OF
RESULTS
A solid performer that’s
capable of producing
attractive images, but the
detail levels don’t amaze

HANDLING
Well thought-out touch-
control and a small
collection of butto, make
it easy to use

We’d be tempted to go
for the 24MP Canon EOS
M50, which is getting on
but has a viewfinder

Canon EOS M200

The M200 launches into a
tough market, and while it’s
a decent camera with some
great features for beginners,
it doesn’t really excite or
produce compelling images.

Overall

100%

TOUCH CONTROL
The features in the menus can be selected
and adjusted by taps on the screen.

POP THE FLASH
Flicking the small catch on the side of the
camera pops up the flash.

NO VIEWFINDER
Images must be composed on the screen
or a connected smartphone.

SIMPLE CONTROLS
There are just a few physical controls on
the back of the camera.

built in, images must be composed on the
screen, and reflections can be problematic
in bright, sunny conditions. There’s also no
electronic level, which can make it difficult to
get the horizon straight.
With the odd exception, the M200’s
Evaluative metering mode does a good job
of getting the exposure of the main subject
right. However, there are times when you
may want to dial in a little negative exposure
compensation to darken the brighter areas. If
you need to, the shadows of underexposed
areas can be brightened by around 3EV or so
to get things looking right. However, keep an
eye on the out-of-focus details.
Detail levels are good but not stellar. We
noticed that the out-of-focus details in some
ISO 400 JPEG files can look rather mushy
under close scrutiny. They look fine at around
A4 size, but you need to be aware of this if
you plan on making large prints or crops. The
auto white balance setting is a reliable default
setting, along with the Standard Picture Style.

While the M200 scores well for ease

of use, its build feels a bit cheap
