THE STILL

Photographer’s name: Joseph Greco

Image location: Sausalito, California
Type of commission: Personal
Shot details: Nikon D80, 18-55mm, 8 secs, f/20, ISO 100

About the shot: One of the biggest challenges for
photographers shooting travel, cityscape or landscape
images is capturing something unique. Achieving a
composition that conveys the best aspects of a familiar
subject but inspires the imagination is no easy task.
This was a challenge for Joseph Greco while shooting
the famous Golden Gate Bridge. “As a San Francisco
native I’ve always had a fondness for the bridge, and I’ve
been photographing it with fog as a personal project.
Being one of the most photographed subjects in the
world, it’s a challenge to try and produce something new.”
In these situations, knowing a location intimately can
help you recognise how to capture the elements that
add the ‘wow factor’ to well-studied landmarks. “San
Francisco is famous for its fog, but a marine layer low
enough to enshroud the bridge, with just the towers
exposed, is a rare event and happens only a few times a
year, due to a particular set of weather conditions.”
“A combination of experience, patience, perseverance,
pre-planning and luck are involved to achieve a
successful shot. Pre-planning involves checking weather
forecasts and live webcams of the bridge. Luck is a factor
because even when conditions are ideal they can change
quickly. Sometimes the window of opportunity is very
short and you need to be in the right place at the right
time. Cold wind and dense, wet fog are also a challenge.
But when it comes together it’s a magical experience!”
It was essential for Joseph to introduce a personal
touch. “It’s a breathtaking experience to witness this
scene in person, and I wanted to convey that. This shot
was taken 20 minutes before sunrise, when the bridge
lights are still lit and the twilight is soft and beautiful.
I used a long exposure to blur the moving fog, which
added a surreal and dreamlike quality to the image.”

Joseph applied basic post-processing in Adobe
Camera Raw and NIK plugin software to enhance
colour: “I wanted a nice compliment of the red
sky and blue fog,” he explains
