Tell us a bit about cystic fibrosis and how
this relates to your photography.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic, chronic illness
that targets both the pancreas and the lungs,
deteriorating both over time. The lifespan
for a person with CF sits at around 35-40
years old, but sadly many also don’t even
make it to adulthood. The illness renders the
pancreas unable to digest foods properly
and thick mucus builds up constantly in the
lungs, making it incredibly hard to breathe.
The best equivalent/example I could give
would be that it feels like you are constantly
breathing through a straw. Many patients with
CF find themselves on a waiting list for lung
transplants during their lifetime, and for me
personally I find myself having around four
hospital admissions per year for two-week
courses of IV antibiotics.
Having CF, I quite often feel like a clock is
ticking down. Given my age, I have practically

already lived half my life, so quite often I feel
rushed to get things done. This pushes me
and motivates me to capture as much as I
can while I can. I want to showcase the beauty
this world has to offer and leave behind
something truly worthy of that. It pushes me
to be the best that I can be, and while it can
be challenging travelling with such a chronic
illness, I have never let it get the best of me
and I have always prevailed over my illness.
In a sense, I want to inspire others with
chronic illnesses to chase their dreams and
to not give up. I want people to see my shots
and think to themselves, “Hey, if he can do it,
so can I.” I quite often liken having CF to being
dealt a bad hand at poker. Sure, it’s a bad
hand, but you can be guaranteed I’ll be playing
that hand to the very best of my abilities. If
that means inspiring as many people as
possible, that’s exactly what I’ll do. We all
deserve the chance to pursue our dreams. DP

A must see place in
Tokyo Omoide Yokocho.
It features several small
alleyways that cater to
Tokyo’s bustling nightlife

While I have many places on my bucket
list, getting this shot of the Tokyo
skyline at night was high up there. It
took a lot of patience as the shot itself
was taken up on the observation deck,
which was loaded with tourists, but it
all paid off in the end and I was able to
tick the shot off.
