“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never

were. But without it we go nowhere”

The above words – borrowed
from the American scientist
Carl Sagan and his 1980
book Cosmos – seem like a
fitting way to introduce our
astrophotography/nighttime
photo feature this issue. Of
course, there are fundamental
technical skills to learn in order
to capture the night sky, the moon and celestial
events, which Jamie Carter will share from p30, but
you also need a sense of wonder and imagination to
take tips and turn them into truly stunning images.
Next up, we move from the dark into the light, with
Holly Wren’s in-depth guide to studio flash setups.
If you’re like me and do anything you can to avoid
shooting in a studio, I fully recommend Holly’s clear
approach to explaining how light style, intensity and
placement can all come together to make beautiful
flash portraits. Her advice starts on p44.

Elsewhere, our staff writer Peter visits the coast to
bring you original ways to capture creative coastal
landscapes like a pro, starting on p58.
In the gear department, you’ll find a full review of
the iPhone 11 Pro Max and its camera capabilities. Is
Apple’s latest smartphone worth the hype – and the
hefty price tag? Find out on p106. We’ve also got the
Canon EOS M200 and an 85mm prime group test.
If you’ve been reading Digital Photographer for a
while, you’ll be familiar with our FileSilo site, a place
to download videos, actions and tutorial files from
each issue. Although FileSilo is staying open so that
you can access all this great past content, we’re
going to be using direct website links (printed in the
magazine) from now on – which should make it even
easier for you to access any free, bonus content!
For now though, have fun devouring the issue.
