S

ome of the most prolific and successful photographers shooting
today first made their name by winning a major competition.
There’s a certain gravitas attached to claiming a grand prize
and being judged as the best, but winning a contest also
means garnering an inevitable amount of exposure. When your work
gets exhibited and published as part of competition promotion, it’s
also going to be shared and seen by pictures editors, journalists and
exhibition‑goers alike – all around the world.
In this feature we’re not convincing you to enter contests, but
sharing how to succeed if you do. There are more photo
contests (and arguably more of us with a camera) than ever
before, which makes it even more important to follow
a contest’s rules and make your images stand out
from the crowd of other entries. Fortunately, we’ve
done some of the hard work for you, by finding
out what the head judges are looking for and
rounding up just a few of 2020’s contests.
Thanks to the expert insight of judges from
the esteemed Landscape Photographer of
the Year, International Garden Photographer
of the Year and EPSON International Pano
Awards, you’ll soon be an expert yourself in
the dos and don’ts of entering big contests,
ready for the next round in 2020.
