Egg White Polishes Leather

and Loosens Chewing Gum
▶ Eggs are being used in many ways to make household tasks easier. The whites will remove chew-
ing gum from furniture or even from hair. Leather chairs rubbed with well-beaten egg whites and
then polished shine like new, and the whipped whites make a substitute for cream in salad dress-
ings, while, if stiffly beaten and added to whipped cream, they double the quantity and improve
the flavor. When beating eggs separately, a little of the beaten white added to the yolks will cause
the latter to thicken more quickly and will not stick to the beater. When the whites of eggs are to
be used in cooking, the yolks can be kept for some time by beating them and adding a little cold
water, then placing in the refrigerator.

SLOW DRAIN
SOLUTION
▶A bathroom sink drain is
a pretty busy place. Shav-
ing cream, makeup, tooth-
paste, stray hair, and soap
residue pass through and,
unfortunately, sometimes
don’t. For a serious clog,
you usually have to resort
to a chemical drain cleaner
or a plumber’s snake. But
for a slow-moving drain,
try a plunger. They’re easy
to use and just about every-
one has one. Fill the sink
with a few inches of water
to provide a good seal.
Next, stuff a wet rag into
the overflow opening of the
sink. Then plunge away.

▶First, make the holes
where the seedlings
are to be transplanted.
Then, with the jaws
of the digger open,
set them down hard
astraddle the plant and
lift it out. It is a good
idea to wet the soil
around the seedlings
to prevent crumbling.

▶If you find yourself with a bottle of wine and no
corkscrew, and you are the type of person who
wears shoes, you are wearing a solution to your
problem. Remove one shoe and place the bottle
of wine inside, so its bottom rests where your heel
would go. Find a sturdy wall that will not scuff—
brick is best. Holding the shoe and bottle so the
bottle is parallel to the ground, repeatedly bang
the flat of the heel against the wall. The cork will
work its way out of the bottle; when enough has pro-
truded, pull it out manually. Return your shoe to
your foot. (Note: won’t work with synthetic corks.)
