choice
DESTINY 2:
SHADOWKEEP
Just when I thought I
was out, they pull me
back in. I’ve been hooked on
Bungie’s life-devouring expansion
since its release. I can’t seem to
stop grinding the season ranks and
artefacts. Someone send help!

Dave’s
choice
YOOKA-LAYLEE AND
THE IMPOSSIBLE LAIR
2D or not 2D... is in no
way a question when
it comes to this cracking little
side-scolling sequel. Pipe down,
Hamlet. The move away from 3D
stages is the making of this retro,
thoroughly sharp platformer.

THE BEST FILMS AND TV THIS MONTH

films tv

SILICON VALLEY
FOR FANS OF Master Of None, The IT Crowd
Software guru Richard Hendricks and his
Pied Pipers return for a sixth and final
season, which is also the shortest.
Mimicking Mark Zuckerberg’s recent(ish)
awkward court appearances, it sees Rich
testifying in front of Congress.

EARTHQUAKE BIRD
FOR FANS OF Gone Girl, Mulholland Drive
Alicia Vikander further cements her leading
lady status in this mystery thriller based on
Susanna Jones’ novel. Set in late ’80s
Tokyo, it sees Vikander’s expat accused of
the murder of a friend following her
mysterious disappearance.

JACK RYAN
FOR FANS OF Spooks, 24
A still disconcertingly buff John Krasinski
reprises his role as Tom Clancy’s favourite
agent, with Amazon bringing back the small
screen thriller for another year. For this
second season, the global terror threat
comes from a nuclear-armed Venezuela.

BOY ERASED
FOR FANS OF Call Me By Your Name
Based on Garrard Conley’s memoirs from his
childhood, this drama tells the tale of how
Conley was forced to undergo gay
conversion therapy by his Baptist parents.
Manchester By The Sea’s Lucas Hedges
shines in the lead role.

BRITANNIA
FOR FANS OF Game Of Thrones
Even though it wasn’t well-received by
critics, the fantasy series is back for a
second season. This time out, Mackenzie
Crook is playing two characters; the
returning druid Veran and new boy Harka,
also known as The Dead Man. Gulp.

THE OLD MAN
AND THE GUN
FOR FANS OF Widows, Heist
Robert Redford’s last big-screen role... not
counting his cameo in Avengers: Endgame.
The story of a charismatic bank robber, this
affable caper sees Redford at the height of
his laid-back, oh-so-charming powers.

DAYBREAK
FOR FANS OF The End Of The F***ing World
Meet the TV show equivalent of Mad Max... if
the apocalypse had hit the Road Warrior
during high school. Following the exploits of
17-year-old Josh as he searches for his
girlfriend, his ragtag band ends up doing
battle with zany gang hordes.

KLAUS
FOR FANS OF The Polar Express
Netflix’s first animated feature film has
been in development for what feels like an
ice age... appropriate, seeing as it serves
up an origin story for Santa Claus. The plot
sees Jason Schwartzman’s postman make
pals with a certain Mr Kringle.

THE CROWN
FOR FANS OF Downton Abbey, Outlander
The Emmy-award-winning drama returns
for a third season and gets an Oscar
upgrade to boot. Academy Award winner
Olivia Colman takes over from Claire Foy as
Queen Elizabeth II, while Tobias Menzies
replaces Matt Smith as Prince Philip.

THE REPORT
FOR FANS OF Zero Dark Thirty
This docudrama lifts the lid on Daniel J
Jones’ investigations into reports of CIA
torture following the 9/11 terror attacks.
Directed by the screenwriter of The Bourne
Ultimatum, it gives Adam Driver a chance to
pull in-no-way Sith-related frowny faces.

BOJACK HORSEMAN
FOR FANS OF Archer, Rick & Morty
The animated alcoholic horsey returns for a
final season. For his last hurrah, Bojack is
struggling with the sobering realities of
rehab as his wife Diane tries to make it on
her own. We’re really going to miss Will
Arnett’s booze jockey equus.

THE IRISHMAN
FOR FANS OF Casino, Heat
The most critically acclaimed Scorsese flick
since Goodfellas, this decades-spanning
mob movie is an absolute epic. Using fancy
CGI face-altering tech, it makes Robert De
Niro’s hitman and Al Pacino’s Jimmy Hoffa
miraculously young again.

Chris’
choice
CALL OF DUTY:
MODERN WARFARE
It did me the world of
good to swerve last
year’s COD offering, and now I’m fully
recharged to get totally wiped out
within the first 30 seconds of Modern
Warfare online. Love the campaign
though, and couch co-op is a blast.
