This has been a thin year for quality triple-A games. Are


studios keeping their powder dry for Project Scarlett?


The Year Of Our
Xbox Overlord,
otherwise known
as 2019, hasn’t
exactly been a
vintage year for
games. With the
likes of Doom Eternal being pushed
back until 2020, this coming festive
period feels downright anaemic. But
why exactly has this year been so
poor for big releases? Are studios
holding back projects so that they can
perfect next-gen versions of games for
Microsoft’s impending Project Scarlett?

Chris: These delays I fear are
something we’ll see more of next
spring, because I find it odd so many
titles are now slated for spring 2020,
which is only six months away from
Scarlett’s release date.

Drew: That will take the wind out of
my sails... though it’d give me a great
excuse to dive into a backlog blitz.

Dave: I think devs are intentionally
keeping their cards close to their chest
on this issue. I don’t think they want to
admit Xbox One’s time is nearly up for
fear of hurting hardware sales.

Adam: Devs have to be holding back. It
seems like the sensible thing to do. I
was a little disappointed with what was
shown at E3. I naively thought there
would be a huge blowout of exciting
new games. I suspect that the only
reason there wasn’t much to see is
because Scarlett is on the horizon.

Drew: I remember a lot of ‘cross-gen’
games releasing for Xbox 360 and Xbox
One. I like to think console architects
