disbanded and Kamala, with her
new-found powers, takes it upon
herself to reach out to each them
with a conspiracy theory that AIM set
them up and was behind the A-Day
attack. Given that Kamala is such a
new character, and in the story is a big
fan of superheroes, we as players are
able to live vicariously through her and
instead of the superheroes saving us,
we’re saving them.You Khan do it
The game will have single-player
Hero missions that deal specifically
with one or more of the playable
Avengers, an example of which would
be the A-Day tutorial. There are co-op
Warzone missions, too, which can
be played in any order, using any
character, with up to four people.
These missions take place all around
the globe and are selected from a hub
screen, with more missions unlocking
as you progress through the game.
The characters are each drastically
different from one another and are
truly satisfying to play as. In the case
of Kamala, who has a shape-shifting
ability, she is able to stretch or
enlarge her limbs. Her ultimate ability,
which she calls ‘Embiggen’, sees her
growing multiple times larger than her
normal size, enabling her to flatten
enemies with ease.
Although each hero you play as is a
pre-existing character, you’ll have an
opportunity to customise and create
your own version of them. There’s a
heavy RPG element underneath that
third-person action design. With
80 years of Marvel history, there’s a
plethora of purely cosmetic outfits for
you to collect. On top of those outfits
is gear, which comes in common,
uncommon, rare, epic or legendary
varieties. As you can guess, the rarer
the item is, the stronger it will be in
battle, and certain gear sets will offer
perks if you’re able to gather all the
individual pieces. The third way you
can customise your hero is through
skills, so you can forge your very own
play style for each character.
This huge level of flexibility in
creating exactly the Avenger we want,
and the promise of an epic story has
us giddy about fulfilling our superhero
fantasy, and from what we’ve seen
and played so far we’re confident we
won’t be disappointed. QThe Avengers always seem to be
saving the day, but who saves the
Avengers when they’re in a bit of a
bind? Kamala Khan, that’s who.
Square Enix’s ambitious Marvel’s
Avengers takes advantage of the
franchise’s 80-year history to bring us
this third-person superhero smasher,
but it’s looking to Marvel’s more recent
history to tell its own original story of
Kamala Khan, or Ms Marvel, who arrived
on the scene in 2013.
The game’s introductory mission
takes place on ‘A-Day’, a celebration
of the opening of the Avengers’
newest west coast headquarters and
a showcase of group’s new Terrigen
crystal reactor. However, disaster soon
strikes. The Avengers are attacked,
resulting in an explosion that destroys
half of San Francisco and causes a
huge leak of the mutagenic Terrigen
mist. Kamala, at the time a young
girl, attends A-Day with the hope of
meeting her heroes and is caught
in the haze – which, as we all know
from superhero logic, means that she
develops powers of her own.
The Avengers are blamed for the
attack and superheroes become
outlawed, with technology company
Advanced Idea Mechanics, or AIM,
rising to power and building a
synthetic AI army to stop superheroes.
