than 200 millionstarlingsinNorthAmerica,
andthey’rewreakinghavoc.
Backinthebird’snativerange,however,
wefacetheoppositeproblem– dwindling
numbers.StarlingsareontheRedListof
speciesofconservationconcern,dueto
steepdeclinesintheirbreedingpopulation.
Sotheawe-inspiringaerialmanoeuvres,
ormurmurations,thatstarlingsperform
beforegoingtoroostinwinterarenoticeably
thinneronthegroundthantheywereas
recentlyasthe1980s.
Yettheduskdisplays,whichareswelled
bymigrantbirdsfleeingtheharsher
conditionsinScandinavia,EasternEurope
andRussia,remaina highlightof
thewildlifewatcher’scalendar.

occuroncold,still,clearevenings
betweenDecemberandFebruary.
