important part of life, wanted to discover
and expose the beauty in his subject. As
Steele-Perkins says: ‘Good photography,
as with good poetry, can sneak through
the back door’. Northern Exposures is an
important book because it paints a broad
picture and depicts the lives of people with
intimacy and honesty. The images reach off
the page and are works of art in their own

means when he talks of the book being
both eulogy and elegy.

Northern Exposures by Chris Steele-Perkins is
published by Northumbria University Press, 2007,
with texts by the author, introduction by William
Varley and a poem, This Far and No Further
by Katrina Porteous.
