Keep your eyes peeled for visual humour
throughout the day. Perhaps there’s a fan
who has dressed up in an individual style,
or someone who has a banner or t-shirt
with a telling slogan written upon it. In this
example, I’ve spotted possibly the smallest
and hairiest fan wearing a football shirt. Sam,
in the number 9 shirt, had terrific ball control
and was a fine dribbler but sadly didn’t make
the team bench this week.

Perhaps the most emotional and heart warming part of the day is the singing of the club
anthems at the beginning and end of the match. Once in the ground, make sure you can get an
angle on your fellow supporters nearby, capturing the moment of worship-like concentration.
You can’t photograph sound of course, so it’s tricky to shoot people looking like they are
singing. You’ll need to make plenty of exposures and look for open-mouthed facial expressions.

4 FINAL OUTCOME
For this project I’ve tried to capture fan reaction before, during and after the game.
The euphoria of a goal celebration, is perhaps the best and most telling one of all.

SECTION 3: CAPTURING THE ATMOSPHERE
Documenting the match is like capturing a typical carnival atmosphere – with the whole gamut of human emotion on show.

While the febrile aftermath of a goal
celebration will always give you the best
opportunity to capture frenzied fan reaction,
don’t underestimate the potential of other
episodes during the game. Disagreements
and differences of opinion with the referee are
always worth shooting, as fans get outraged
and gesticulate, often wildly. Keep an eye on
your fellow supporters nearby and see if you
can capture hand gestures, like my example.
Don’t worry if you can’t pull perfect focus, as
a bit of movement or defocus helps to convey
the feeling of being in the thick of it.
