THE PLAY OF LIGHT

The importance of practising our photography often gets overshadowed


by the desire to find the killer shot but, says Eddie Ephraums,


time spent looking and watching could be just what we need.

know that it’s good for my
photography, but how often
do I practise different aspects
of the process, and then stick
at practising one of them for
a good length of time, like an

entire day? Typically, I’m so
focused on looking for the bigger
picture that I forget to exercise
the individual parts that make up
the whole. Yet each photographic
part benefits from regular

exercise, for example, practising
with the play of light, as in this
One Day Project.
Practice removes the pressure
to perform. There’s no striving
to make a great picture, and

with this freedom comes
the opportunity to discover
something ‘other’ about a
subject, that perhaps wasn’t at
first apparent. If I think back
