NEW GPU

Theinclusionof

larger worlds and environments to
lose ourselves in on PS5, so that
rumoured Horizon Zero Dawn sequel
is going to be epic.

TRACING
(IN GPU HARDWARE
NOT SOFTWARE)

PS5 will perform GPU-based ray-tracing,
as confirmed by Mark Cerny in a recent
Wired article: “There is ray-tracing
acceleration in the GPU hardware,” he told
the website, “which I believe is the
statement that people were looking for.”
Ray-tracing is a feature that allows for
complex light and sound effects to be
rendered in a 3D space, and doing this in
the GPU means PS5 won’t be imitating but
performing ray-tracing. And EA’s chief
studio officer Laura Miele told Wired its
devs are: “experimenting with ambient
occlusion techniques [and] the
examination of ray-tracing shadows”.

& PLAY?

The inclusion of SSD loading, a 100GB
disc, and online streaming points to one of
the fastest disc-based consoles we’ve ever
had. “The SSD has me really excited,” said
Marco Thrush, president of Bluepoint
Games during a Wired website interview.
“You don’t need to do gameplay hacks any
more to artificially slow players down [or]
lock them behind doors, anything like that.
Back in the cartridge days, games used to
load instantly; we’re kind of going back to
what consoles used to be.”

OCCLUSION

The days of
counting polygons

in a car model or
scene are over; the

next gen is about
realistic lighting.

Being able to
perform perfect

ambient occlusion,
the ability to
calculate real-time

light, will deliver
photoreal games.

REAL-TIME HOME SCREEN

PS5’s UI will feature real-time
updates, news, and events. Mark
Cerny explained to Wired how
we’ll be able to see what’s
happening in our games without
needing to insert a disc or load
a game. “Even though it will
be fairly fast to boot
games, we don’t want the
player to have to boot the
game [to] see what’s up,”
Cerny told the website.

“Multiplayer game servers will
provide the console with the set of
joinable activities in real time.
Single-player games will provide
information like what missions
you could do and what rewards
you might receive for
completing them – and all of
those choices will be visible
in the UI. As a player you
just jump right into
whatever you like.”

MACHINE

LEARNING

“First, there was a time when graphics
improved, then there was network features,
and now I guess you can say it’s a return to
the ‘programmable’ era,” said Yakuza series
director Toshihiro Nagoshi in a recent Sega
Nama broadcast. “I think artificial
intelligence and machine learning will
continue to evolve.” This means PS5 could
track the games you play and how you
play, learning from your interactions to
adjust not only the difficulty of a game
but also its narrative focus.
