IT TOOK ROUGHLY 24 hours to print all
1,062,000 copies of this issue of Popular
Mechanics. That’s 2,500 feet of paper per
minute spooling through a printing press
at Quad/Graphics in Saratoga Springs,
New York. Machine’s a couple stories
high, 15 feet wide, and about the length
of one side of a baseball diamond. Paper
hums by at about 28 miles per hour as
the press perfectly executes the kinds of
things the ads in the magazine it prints
used to promise to 1950s housewives:
self-feeding! Slices, dices, and folds! Mul-
tiple colors available! “There’s probably a
million and one ways you could web up a
press,” says Chuck Clark, who has been
in the press room for 32 years and talks
dense with terms like “web,” which refers

to the long rolls of paper routed through
the press, and “ovens” and “chills,” which
take the web from nearly 300 degrees to
75 degrees in less than a second, setting
the ink, and “ribbons,” which the “slit-
ting process” creates from the web, each
two magazine pages wide. By the time the
press is done, the ribbons are sequenced,
folded, and cut into page sets. Through-
out the run, it’s a crew of four or five that
tends the machine, feeding it paper and
chemicals, shuttling skids of completed
pages, and monitoring the faithful repro-
duction of PM’s design files. Clark and
his team do a lot of the regular main-
tenance themselves, too. If you see a
problem in this month’s issue, it’s prob-
